Special cancellation rights: check requirements and evidence
German source reviewed on 22 September 2026.
When might a special right to cancel apply?
A special right to cancel depends on the type of contract, the specific circumstances and the applicable terms. Not every price increase, house move or illness entitles you to end every contract immediately. First check the provider's notice and your documents; there is no single two- or four-week deadline that applies to all these situations.
| Situation | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Price or contract change | What change has been announced, when is it due to take effect and which cancellation method is specified? |
| Moving home | What type of contract do you have and what service can be provided at the new location? |
| Service problem | What was agreed, what is missing and how have you already reported the fault? |
| Illness | Which service are you likely to be unable to use, for how long and what evidence do you have? |
Why does the type of contract matter?
For telecommunications, the Bundesnetzagentur explains your rights when contract terms change. Specific requirements and deadlines apply in this sector. For energy contracts, the Bundesnetzagentur's information on cancellation is a suitable starting point. Do not apply a rule from one sector to another.
For a gym membership, moving home is normally not sufficient grounds for extraordinary cancellation. A long-term illness may need to be assessed differently. The Verbraucherzentrale's guidance on gym contracts explains the details and distinctions.
Which documents should I gather?
Collect the contract, current bill, notice of changes and previous correspondence. For a service fault, it helps to record when it occurred, how long it lasted, which service was affected and how you reported it. Only make claims in your letter that you can actually support with evidence. Limit medical documents to what is necessary for the particular matter.
Write your notice so that the provider can identify the contract concerned and your reason for cancelling. State your preferred end date and ask for a reply explaining the provider's position. For service problems, check whether you must first request a remedy. If the deadline or legal basis is unclear, advice on your individual case is useful.
What can SnapCancel do?
SnapCancel creates a letter from the information you provide. The form does not determine whether you legally have a special right to cancel. You can create a free PDF to send yourself or use the available email option. Successful technical delivery does not mean the provider will accept your reason.
Find your provider on the homepage and then save the letter and reply. If the provider rejects your cancellation, check its explanation against your documents. An advice service can help clarify whether you should provide further information, challenge the decision or cancel under the ordinary terms at the earliest possible date. Do not stop payments simply because you have created a letter requesting cancellation on special grounds.
