Cancel a mobile contract: notice, format and keeping your number

What notice period applies to my mobile contract?

First check the minimum term, notice period and contract end date in your contract summary or bill. If a telecommunications contract has been automatically renewed after its minimum term, you can cancel it with one month's notice. One month is not the same as four weeks, and cancellation does not generally have to take effect at the end of a calendar month. Your plan may also offer more favourable contractual terms.

What information do I need?

Have your current bill and contract documents ready. Make sure your cancellation clearly identifies the mobile service you want to end. This is particularly important if several phone numbers share one customer number.

1. Give your name and the address held by the provider.
2. Add your customer or contract number and the phone number concerned.
3. State clearly that you are cancelling and give your preferred or earliest possible end date.
4. Ask for confirmation stating the exact contract end date.

Check the recipient details before sending and save the completed letter.

How do I keep my phone number?

Arrange the transfer with your new provider. Transferring your number early does not automatically end your old mobile contract; charges under that contract may continue until it ends. Providers are not allowed to charge for transferring your phone number. Can I cancel early because of a problem?

Price adjustments and service problems need to be assessed separately. Document the specific issue and the provider's notices.
